A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant questions over operational security.
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
