Trapped for much of the match, the Seagulls were ensnared by Nuno Espírito Santo's defensive plan. This approach appeared perfect when the Hammers' captain converted a swift break, slotting home from a tight angle only seconds after Callum Wilson entered the field. However, in keeping with their reputation at the home ground, the hosts staged a stoppage-time rally, with Rutter hammering in the equalising goal from a goalmouth scramble to earn a draw.
For long stretches, the home side's offensive play was surprisingly lacklustre, failing to muster a solitary shot on target. Their aspirations of reaching European competition continue to be undermined by this erratic form. West Ham, also struggling near the foot of the table, adopted a deep line, content to defend and play long balls for their speedy forwards to pursue. Awful inclement weather further hampered any flow of the game.
“The worse the weather got, the more the likelihood for a mistake or lucky bounce leading to a score,” the feeling grew.
The deadlock was eventually broken in West Ham's favour. One rare error from Brighton centre-back van Hecke was pounced on by Wilson, who immediately sent Jarrod Bowen clear to finish. This seemed to have sealed a crucial three points for West Ham in their battle against relegation. The Seagulls, stirred by the conceded goal, pushed for an equaliser, coming close when Kilman nearly deflected the ball into his own net.
As late goals are habitual at the Amex Stadium, the home supporters retained a sliver of hope. Their belief was rewarded in during closing moments. Amid a hectic goalmouth scramble, van Hecke displayed composure to pass the ball into the area, where Georginio Rutter was on hand to crash it into the roof of the net. The equaliser triggered rapturous scenes from the Brighton contingent, while it was a crushing setback to the Hammers' safety bid.
The draw fails to alleviate the drop zone concerns surrounding West Ham, who remain firmly entrenched in the fight at the foot of the Premier League. Meanwhile for Albion, it represents another example of their resilient spirit, but also highlights the erratic performances that are holding back their campaign.
